These Ain't the Appalachians...

September 2024

I've got a Patreon!

Do you love the art that I make, and the research behind it? Maybe you want to know how I make what I do? Well, you'd be in luck. I've started a new patreon where you can help support everything I'm doing.

Mobile Studio

Imagine having to pack up your entire studio and fit it into a suit case...

Well thats what I did. I set up a mobile studio that fits in my arms, and moved 5,248 miles and across country with it. For anybody who's ever been in my studio before you know how crazy this is for me. My practice involves quilting, weaving, spinning thread, natural dyes, printmaking, and ceramics, and those are just the main things I do. Thats so many tools and equipment to need. I ended up with a sewing bag, a digital equipment/ camera bag, my ceramics lunchbox, and finally a printmaking box

Getting back into making...

Finally got my hands on some yarn, raw wool, a new sketch book, and a new spindle. In Quechua it's called a pushka

(pus-h-ka). I also gathered some raw salt from some of the salt flats around us which actually has compounds perfect for dying. I'm excited to experiment with some local dyes, and discover some new colours from the plants and earth around me! You'll probably see the results in next months newletter. πŸ˜‰

Gauchito Hill

While traveling across country in Argentina you can find oodles of little decorated sanctuaries to a saint by the name of Gauchito Gil. He's the protector of travelers with truck drivers especially fond of him. I have found myself also in favor of him after some of the roads we traveled on. There's a reason the Andes are known for being the second largest mountain range in the world. My experience looking over the edge of the road as we drove some of the windy roads hit this fact home for me.

For good luck and safe travels you beep as you go by him. When you stop, you're supposed to leave him some food, alcohol, and drink and eat with him. As it would turn out, our muffler broke on a gravel road. With a hammock strap and what I like to call good 'ole hillbilly engineering, I was able to fix it long enough to get to a mechanic. We were pretty close and we had everything fixed within a day. Also gotta give a shoutout to my dad for all the mechanical knowledge he gave me throughout my life.

This is particularly abundant offering to Gauchito

Just doing my duty and drinking with Gauchito after some harrowing roads.

Upcoming Exhibition

For anybody in the Fayetteville, West Virginia or in the area I'll have an exhibition of work close to the end of March 2025. The work shown will be many of these pieces from my Hollers, Hills, & Buckshot | Anthologies of Appalachia show. However, I'm working on new work here in Argentina. This exhibition will be an exploration in to mountain folks and their communities. A chance to highlight two distinct cultures across hemispheres the Appalachians and the northern Andes of Argentina.

It's Been a while... Hey y'all it's been awhile since I've sent an up date. I've been working underground and stepping away from social media focusing on my work and research. I needed time to evaluate my practice. I've been figuring out what types of platform best suit my needs, and the things that I'm creating. A few things are coming in the future. The most notable right now is that I'll be doing away with my patreon in favor of Substack. Be on the look out for some links to that once I'm...
